In my own word online activism taking action against something for what you believe on social media and technology. Online activism can be very helpful for movements along with bring awareness to people from all over the world who may also be in agreement. It has become common for people to be heard and express their beliefs for what is right as well as to what is wrong over time. This allies with digital leadership because bringing awareness for a situation you believe whether it is for social injustice, racism, or sexism can encourage others to speak up about what they also believe in. Through long meaningful post, videos, or even just a simple hashtag can be online activism. Online activism can be towards anything you believe in and taking a stand by speaking up and using your voice online. This has made a difference in this world by allowing people who agree about the same movements to be able to connect and show action for what they support through social media and technology. Bringing people together for what they support without having to meet up in person, rally, or even stand outside and protest.

An online activism that I think about is one that taken over all social media in 2020 #BLM. George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Jacob Blake were all victims of police brutality in some ways causing them to lose their lives which was the reason behind this activism. There wasn’t a day that I was online where I did not see a post about one of the three names with the hashtag #BLM. This movement was to bring peace and justice to those who were lost due to the police. The #BLM seemed to grow more than just a hashtag as many people began to use the hashtag to bring awareness against social injustice. Smaller cities where stuff may have happened may not all be seen by the public but with online activism it gives a chance for small communicates to come together as well as expand their voices so they are heard.

In the article “Hashtag Activism Isn’t a Cop-Out” Berlatsky talks about the power a hashtag can have or even speaking up online for what you believe. It is not any less impactful or meaningful than protesting or rallying and is just as powerful. Being able to speak up online isn’t any easier or less of an effort it has a lot of meaning and can make an impact for you, your community, and those who want to and are willing to help you be heard.
